Aethiopiae populi Herodoto, Melae, l. 1. c. 4. ac Plinio, l. 5. c. 8. inter quos nullam nominum appellationem esle aiunt. Hi forte hodie regnum Borneo dictum habitant, cuius incolas nullum proprium nomen habere tradit Ioh. Leo, omnesque a quodam accidente appellari; ut quem procerâ staturâ conspiciunt, procerum; quem pinguedine onustum, pinguem; sic caecum, calvum, surdum, etc. nominant. Aliis duo sunt populi eôdem nomine, decem dierum itinere inter se dissiti, ut apud Herodotum videre est l. 4. ubi tradit, a Garamantibus decem dierum itinere salis tumulum reperiri, circa quem habitent homines, οἳ ἀνώνυμοί εἰσι μοῦνοι ἀνθρώπων, qui soli mortalium nomine carent: Et hos esle Atlantes dicit, qui Solis ortus diris prosequantur. Ab his, decem itidem dierum spatiô, alium salis tumulumundique secus habitari ab hominibus, quibus itidem nomen sit Atlantes, a monte vicino, addit; qui nomen habeant proprium, sed qui nulla cernant somnia, et ab animalium esu abstineant. Quae omnia de unis iisdemque Atlantibus produnt Plin. Mela et Solin. c. 34. In hac Auctorum diversitate, quid sentiendum, non adeo liquet. Apud Veteres quidem duplex mons Atlas, ponitur, Α῎τλας ἐλάττων, Atlas minor et Α῎τλας μείζων, Atlas maior, Ptolem. et Steph. Sed non tantô hi intervallô a se invicem absunt, quantum ab Herodoto inter utrumque populum ponitur. Praeterea uterque Atlas ad Oceanum, a quo longe remoti priores Herodoti Atlantes.
